Typing times quickly
You don’t need to type colons or AM/PM. 9, 930, 9:30 and 9:30p all work, and Now (or typing now) fills in the current time. If your shift ends after midnight, enter the times as they happened, such as 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM; the calculator sees that the end is earlier than the start and counts across midnight.
For several shifts, tap Add another shift. Same as shift… copies the previous line when the times repeat.
Example: a split shift
Sam works 10:30 AM to 2:15 PM at a restaurant, then comes back for 5:00 PM to 10:45 PM with a 15-minute unpaid break.
- First shift: 3 hours 45 minutes.
- Second shift: 5 hours 45 minutes, minus the 15-minute break = 5 hours 30 minutes.
- Total: 9 hrs 15 min, which is 9.25 hours in decimal (15 ÷ 60 = 0.25).
- At $16.50 an hour: 9.25 × $16.50 = $152.63 before tax.
How the hours are worked out
hours worked = end time − start time − unpaid break
Each time is turned into minutes after midnight, so the subtraction is exact. For an overnight shift, 24 hours is added to the end time first. The total is shown as hours and minutes and as decimal hours (minutes ÷ 60, to two places), which is what most payroll systems ask for.
Pay is worked out from the exact minutes and rounded to the cent. If your employer rounds clock punches to the quarter hour, your payslip can differ slightly; the time clock calculator shows the effect of rounding.
