Example: entering a timesheet into payroll

Jamal worked 7 hours 38 minutes on Monday, but the payroll system only takes decimal hours.

  1. 38 ÷ 60 = 0.6333, so the time is 7.6333 hours.
  2. Rounded to two places: 7.63 hours. At $22.00 an hour that’s $167.86.

If his employer rounds to tenths instead, the same time is 7.6 hours; to the nearest quarter hour, it’s 7.75.

The conversion and rounding rules

decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60

To go back, multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.63 × 60 = 37.8, so 7.63 hours is about 7 hours 38 minutes.

  • Tenths work in 6-minute blocks: 0–2 minutes round down to .0, 3–8 minutes give .1, 9–14 minutes give .2, and so on.
  • Quarter hours work in 15-minute blocks: 0–7 minutes round down, 8–22 minutes give .25, and so on.

Employers set their own rounding rule, and U.S. federal rules expect it to even out over time. If you’re unsure which applies, use the exact figure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert 45 minutes to decimal?
Divide by 60: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours. The other quarters are just as easy to remember: 15 minutes is 0.25 and 30 minutes is 0.50.
What is 0.1 hours in minutes?
Six minutes (0.1 × 60). That’s why rounding to tenths is sometimes called the 6-minute rule.
Why is 1 minute 0.02 and not 0.01?
One minute is 0.0167 hours, which rounds to 0.02. Some payroll tools cut off the extra digits instead of rounding and show 0.01, so small differences can appear.
How do I convert seconds to decimal hours?
Divide the seconds by 3,600, or type them in the Seconds box. 1 hour 20 minutes 30 seconds is 1 + 20 ÷ 60 + 30 ÷ 3,600 = 1.3417 hours.
Is 7.5 hours the same as 7 hours 50 minutes?
No. 7.5 hours is 7 hours 30 minutes. 7 hours 50 minutes is 7.83 hours. Mixing these up is one of the most common timesheet mistakes.
