Filling in the card
- Lunch: either type the unpaid minutes under Break, or tick Lunch in/out to enter the times you clocked out and back in. If you also took an unpaid break you didn’t clock out for, tick Extra unpaid break.
- Repeating hours: Same as… copies the previous day’s times and break. Leave days off blank.
- Pay period: Biweekly adds a second week. Semimonthly and monthly cards start on the 1st (or the 16th); pick any date in the period.
- Pay and overtime: open Pay, overtime & rounding to add a rate, choose the overtime rule and set punch rounding.
Print gives a card with signature lines; Export CSV opens in Excel or Google Sheets.
Example: a 44-hour week
Maria works 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch, and covers 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday. She earns $18.00 an hour under the federal over-40 rule.
- Each weekday is 8.00 hours (8 h 30 min minus lunch), so the week is 40 + 4 = 44.00 hours.
- Overtime: 44 − 40 = 4.00 hours.
- Pay: 40 × $18.00 + 4 × $27.00 = $720.00 + $108.00 = $828.00 gross.
Under a daily rule (overtime after 8 hours a day) the same week has no overtime at all, because no single day goes over 8 hours.
Overtime rules on the card
- Weekly (U.S. federal): hours over 40 in the workweek are paid at 1.5×.
- Daily: hours over 8 in a day are overtime. With a double-time limit set, hours beyond it are paid at 2×.
- Daily and weekly: daily overtime is counted first, and those hours aren’t counted again toward the weekly 40, so nothing is paid twice.
- California: overtime after 8 hours a day or 40 a week, double time after 12 hours a day, plus the seventh-consecutive-day rule.
On biweekly and longer cards, each workweek is checked on its own. Federal law doesn’t allow averaging, so 50 hours one week and 30 the next still includes 10 overtime hours. The pay figure is an estimate; check your state’s rules. For how punch rounding works, see the time clock calculator.
